Welcome to the website of Green Cross Netherlands (GCNL). On this website you will find information about our organisation, mode of operation, and objectives.
Green Cross Netherlands is one of the 30 national organizations of Green Cross International (GCI), an international environmental organization that strives for a just and sustainable world with future prospects for all its inhabitants.
On the 18th of April 1993, Green Cross International was presented to the world press in Kyoto. Former President Mikhail Gorbachev was the initiator of our organization and, therefore, closely involved with its foundation. In this tribute our founding President clearly explains why we should be worried about the wrongs of current world affairs and that Green Cross therefore seeks to promote a culture of peace.
Green Cross’ approach is based on the “urgency/response” model of the Red Cross. Through its programs, we try to reach those people who are in most urgent need of help due to conflicts and environmental disasters.

In addition, Green Cross focuses on dialogue. It is the first and as yet the only organization that was able to reconcile politics and public in Russia on the issue of disarmament. Green Cross is also one of the few non-governmental organizations that are allowed to participate in the disarmament rounds on global destruction of chemical and biological weapons. Hereby our organization generally serves as a critical player towards governments and the weapon industry. Green Cross is also active in the fight against nuclear weapons.
Finally, Green Cross is co-founder of the Earth Charter, the universal declaration on the fundamental principles for a just, sustainable and peaceful world in the 21st century.
Green Cross’ programs and projects are divided into the following five focus areas:
Energy
Water
Environmental Security
SocMed
Education
